Living in a town Where only white people live What does it do to your heart? Living in a town Where mostly rich people live What does it do to your heart? Reading the news Without knowing what to do What does it do to your heart? Hearing the voice of God And remaining as you were What does it do to your heart?

Dark was the night Cold was the ground I once was lost But now I'm just wandering around It seems so long Since I met anyone Who really seemed to Care about anything So here I sit Swallowed by my skepticism Tightening my first Watching too much television But you gotta shine your shoes For the fat lady You gotta shine your shoes Every day You gotta shine your shoes For the fat lady That's what I heard my brother say I've been fumbling my faith Like an egg on a spoon In a summer party race In the hottest day of June And I'm all over the place I'm all over the place I'm all over the place And I think I spoke too soon But you gotta shine your shoes For the fat lady You gotta shine your shoes Every day You gotta shine your shoes For the fat lady That's what I heard my brother say

Baby girl Born into dark times People with dark minds Always running their mouths Is it right To shield you from it? Shelter you from pain And if so, for how long? The echoes Of a brighter day Can be heard always In the cooing of infants

about

NOTE: I’ve removed the option to pay for this EP and ask that instead you download it for free and donate to the NAACP or the Souther Poverty Law Center (or really any related organization is OK with me!). I’m just trying to make it easy for you with listing two of my favorites.

It’s so weird being shut in my house in the middle of a Dutch farm town in rural WA during all of this. The song “Living In A Town” was written during the Charlottesville riots in 2017 as a self reflective look at what happens to the human soul when they live in a bubble and ignore their convictions while still observing the horrors of the outside world.
I want to use the release of this final EP as a call to action to start living out your convictions. If you have kids, equip yourself in how to raise them to stand for truth and justice and love. That’s the journey I am on. I think this is only possible, though, if you are a living example. If you don’t have kids, just be the example to everyone around you. I think it starts with self reflection. Where do I fit into this mess? What is my role in all of this? What kind of biases to I have?

These are things I pray about. God is continually weeding darkness out of my heart. The book of James says that whoever knows what’s good and does not do it, it’s sin. There are many resources of good that can be done for our brothers and sisters in this country today, that many of you are very vigilant in sharing. However you choose to participate in this necessary fight, don’t do nothing.

That’s all. Thanks for going on this EP journey with me.
